What Should I Expect When I Receive My New Hearing Aids?

We take you through several steps while fitting you with your new hearing aids:

The parts of your hearing aids

Battery insertion and removal

Hearing aid insertion and removal

Adjusting the controls of your hearing aids (if applicable)
Using your hearing aids with the telephone
Basic hearing aid maintenance
Possible hazards related to hearing aids and batteries
Warranties (repair, loss and damage)

The sound quality and fit of your hearing aids may be fine-tuned at subsequent visits. When the initial hearing aid fitting is completed, your trial period begins. This is the time for you to adjust to your newfound hearing in different listening situations and determine if your audiologist needs to make adjustments. We give you detailed information on how to care for you hearing aids.

A Few Precautions & Reminders

Batteries are hazardous if swallowed: Keep them out of reach of children and pets, and do not store them next to medications.

Hearing aids are not childs play: When you are not wearing your hearing aids, store them away from children and pets.

Keep your hearing aids dry: Always take them out before showering or swimming.

Do not expose your hearing aids to extreme heat.
Open the battery door when you are not using your hearing aids: This will increase battery life, prevent the hearing aids from whistling, and ventilate the interior of the hearing aids.
The most important thing about caring for your hearing aids is to clean them daily with the tools provided.
Adjusting to your new hearing aids will take some time. The world will seem alive with many new and seemingly strange sounds. Because your hearing has not been functioning normally for some time, everyday sounds may seem unnatural at first. Relax, those sounds will gradually become normal again. Your hearing aids will amplify both the sounds you want to hear and some of the sounds that you may prefer not to hear. It may be somewhat annoying at first, but with patience and a short period of adjustment you should soon adapt to your newfound hearing.

Batteries

We have been using the Starkey Rayovac battery for over 10 years and have found that, when ordered from the factory every 3 months, they last longer than those sitting on the shelves for more than 6 months. These batteries are air activated, with a shelf life of one year regardless of the date on the batteries. This shelf life is due to our dry, hot Arizona climate: If the batteries are sitting out, the tabs dry up and air leaks into the hole and activates the battery before it is placed in the hearing aid, thereby shortening the batterys life.

We have a battery club where we keep track of how many you buy. After every 5th package purchase (six batteries to a package), you get the 6th package free.
